I started Bikram Yoga when a friend of mine in Connecticut suggested I join him. That was over 10 years ago. To be honest, I had no idea just how much of an important and positive impact it would have on my life; physically, mentally and spiritually. I have travelled all over the world and practiced in hundreds of studios in New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong and even Mumbai to name just a few.
I discovered Jenny at Hot Yoga of Johns Creek in Alpharetta, GA and have practiced at her studio for the last five years. Jenny is UNIQUE....true one of a kind. She is without any doubt the most passionate, demanding, strong willed, outspoken, intelligent and driven of yoga instructors. She knows exactly what she is doing and is a perfectionist about doing hot yoga right. I think that she is fantastic but it is not for everyone.
There are lots of other studios with young tattooed hipsters, Lululemon clad babes and funky earth muffins but I have not come across a teacher and studio as good as Jenny at Johns Creek Hot Yoga.
Yes...she is Russian and was a graduate level math teacher. She is super tough and does not put up within any crap. The studio is always good and hot and there are lots of corrections when required. Her studio is new, stylish, spotless and well appointed. Her schedule is fixed, convenient and reliable. Her students are friendly, fun, fit and have the best triangles in the country. In the words of President Harry S. Truman, "If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen".
I've been doing hot yoga for 10 years and moved to Johns Creek in June 2012. I immediately started doing yoga at this studio, and think Jenny is one of the best instructors I've ever had.
I travel internationally for my work, and have done hot yoga in Canada, France, the UK, the USA, Chile, South Africa and Italy. Jenny is a strict but fair instructor who pays attention to her students and ensures they don't get hurt while doing yoga. That is invaluable in an instructor.
Hot yoga is good for your body, but most importantly, it's good for your soul. In our busy lives and world, it's where I go to be silent, go within, reflect on my strengths and weaknesses, and ultimately find my inner strength.
Trusting Jenny (the instructor) is one of the best decisions I have made! I am an immigrant to this country, wife, mother, Ironman, Boston Marathon runner and cancer survivor. When we trust our instincts, we learn and grow. Jenny has a sixth sense when instructing her students; she is able to see what students need to improve. Americans have grown used to having things come easy to them, this yoga isn't easy, but if you can trust and commit to it, it will help you be balanced. Not just with the yoga practice (the balance of strength and flexibility), but with life. Jenny recognizes when you should push and when you need to be careful.
After opening your heart to this yoga you can learn to have this balance in your life. She has a unique way about her, and it isn't going to suit everyone. If you can be dedicated and listen you will see that Jenny is a brilliant yoga teacher. She can come across as controlling; but a mature, accepting attitude will help you realize that sometimes you need to be told what to do, not let your ego and fear get in the way. Bottom line: Jenny can help you reach your goals. She cares deeply for her students and you can learn to be stronger and more confident. If you have a negative attitude please, stay home. It is contagious and we don't want it around.
I started doing Hot Yoga around summer 2011. I was under chronic back pain for so many years. I have tried different workout activities, but non of those really worked for me. Or I should say I did not develop continuous interest of doing any one of the activities. Then I found hot Yoga.
I have been practicing hot yoga about 18 months now, and it's great. I just love it. My initial plan was to try something different to deal with my back pain. However, the first benefit I saw was losing weight. I have lost 15 pounds so far. Most of my friends all amazed how I looked now. It's not just my body losing weight but it's my overall body is so fit now. I never ever dream of myself being a 'fit' person since I am really not a 'sporty' type of person.
As for my back pain, I had been suffering back pain for about 8 years after two pregnancies. I am also working in the office so sitting down all day long just makes my back pain even worse. Now after these months practicing yoga, I want to say my back pain is 90% gone. The 10% is still there and it's more from the 8 hours sitting in the office.
I want to say, hot yoga changes my life. It really does. I feel like a totally different person now. My energy level is much better than before. I am healthy and look great. Thank you Jenny!!!
My first class was on May 6, 2012. I came into this yoga with no expectations or idea what was going to happen in the 90 minutes that followed. All I can say is that first class was life changing!!
I left my first class feeling frustrated yet completed exhilarating!! I was frustrated because I was not in as good of shape as I thought I was and I was not able to complete all of the postures as I had hoped, but I was hooked!! It has been a little over 3 months now and my physical and mental states have improved tremendously!! I have lost 10+ pounds, my body has toned and tightened, my balance and strength have increased tremendously, my mind has become more relaxed causing my stress levels to decrease, and my energy level has increased significantly! I can honestly say I am in the best shape of my life!!
Every day is challenging and I am constantly pushing myself to do better than the day before!! I just completed a 30-day challenge that I set for myself and now have set a new goal for 60 days! I would like to thank Jenny for having an amazing studio to practice! I would like to thank Jenny personally for constantly challenging me to push myself and not become complacent in my practice. The ONLY regret that I have is not finding Hot Yoga and Jenny sooner!
I took my first yoga class ever with Jenny at Hot Yoga. It was one of the most intense classes I have ever taken. Jenny was a great instructor. She will push you to do your best in the class. She was also great in making sure that the poses are done correctly. I really appreciated this additional instruction.
I am 42 and active in a variety of sports. For the last 8-10 years I have struggled with recurring back pain which has limited my ability to be active in the sports I enjoy most. Over the years I have been to orthopedists, physical therapy, chiropractors, and a sports massage therapist in an effort to address the issue. Everything I tried resulted in little, if any, tangible & sustainable progress. I initially started Hot Yoga at Jennys with one objective, to alleviate back pain.
I can honestly say that within 2-3 weeks I noticed an improvement. Although I have been practicing only 6 months, I rarely experience back pain and even when I do the severity is significantly less and the recovery time is drastically reduced. The results have been nothing short of amazing.
Jenny's hot yoga series is the only form of yoga I have ever tried, intend to try, or have any interest in trying. I have no ambitions of excelling at hot yoga, but I intend to continue indefinitely practicing hot yoga because it has allowed me to continue to pursue the activities that are my passion, where every other "traditional" approach has failed. Hot Yoga of Johns Creek is an "enabler"! It has enabled me to live the active life I want.
Jenny is a tough instructor. Her hot yoga sequence is tough. If you want something easy going, constant praise, or to be showered with compliments, you might another instructor or form of yoga to be a better fit for your needs. However, if your objective is to push yourself, do postures correctly, and improve your yoga practice, I find Jenny to be truly exceptional. They both get high praise from me!
Allen "Sunshine" Webb
The best word to describe my experience at Jenny's Hot Yoga is revitalizing. At 55, I was looking for something to make me feel good about myself inside and out and her hot yoga series is a perfect fit. Instead of my previous boring exercise programs, this is a "new way of life" that is both challenging and rewarding. After 2 months I can feel myself getting stronger every week and that strength is both physical and mental.
Jenny is tough for sure and she is an excellent instructor. She corrects my postures when needed, pushes me to do the best I can and acknowledges my improvements. While the classes are tough, it's hard to explain how good I feel after I've completed each class. It's such a high!!! The studio is immaculate and it is designed beautifully. Jenny, you are a character and I thank you for pushing me and motivating me. I love Johns Creek Hot Yoga!!!
I started Jenny's Hot Yoga in order to tone up my body, instead I have found so much more. My body has changed in incredible ways, I feel stronger from the inside out. My mind has also become much calmer. I have always been a major worrier, constantly stressing myself out over everything and anything. This yoga has helped me manage my stress. I find myself not worrying about much of the things that bothered me before. I feel so rejuvenated after every class and this feeling carries over to the rest of my life. Hot Yoga has become such an important part of my life, I don't know how I survived for so many years without it.
I start graduate school in the fall and I have only applied to schools that have Hot Yoga studios within the city. Nevertheless I hope to stay in Atlanta, so I can remain practicing at this studio. The environment is warm, relaxed, and friendly; exactly what I need after a long day. Each teacher has their own style, but they are all helpful and patient. They push you to the limit, at the same time being aware and concerned for your safety. If it was not for their constant feedback I would have given up on myself within the first month. Commiting myself to Hot Yoga has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am forever greatful for the gift that I have discovered at this studio. Thank you Jenny and everyone else for being part of the best 90 minutes of my day!
If you want to change your life this yoga is for you. You go into a 105 degree room with 40% humidity and contort your body in way that you are convinced is not possible, but with proper instruction over time you have amazing results. If you want to lose weight reduce stress or create balance in your life try it. I have been to about 10 different studio in the U.S. and Canada and this studio and instructor are hands down the best. Jenny is tough as nails and I'd sooner cross a African Water Buffalo, but her passion for her hot yoga craft makes all of her students feel better, look better, and live better.
Simply put, Hot Yoga is the best thing I've ever done for myself. Since starting 2 1/2 months ago, I can honestly say that (physically and psychologically) I am in much better shape. I am not athletic by nature and I don't know how I have convinced myself to keep coming back class after class, but I am so glad I have. Honestly, as rigorous as this yoga is, I knew from day one that this place is special and I would improve my health immensely if I could just stick it out.
Everything about the place is a testament to the studio owners' commitment to excellence. The studio is very well appointed and very well organized. Jenny and all the instructors give you 100% each class and they strive to get 100% from each student as well. While I sometimes wish I could "slack off" in some postures, I know that not being allowed to will only benefit me in the long run and I appreciate the fact that I know I am learning this yoga practice the correct way.
Hot yoga is a little controversial because of the level of heat in the classroom. I am very curious by nature, and have read a good bit about Bikram Choudhury and his development of this particular series of Bikram Yoga postures. For what it's worth, all serious followers of yoga will attest that this yoga is the "real deal" and excellent for your health. If you go, don't give up early on. Just keep coming - eventually you will know. You will just know. ;-)
Well, I am finally getting around to writing a little something about Carol's and my experience with Hot Yoga of Johns Creek over the last 3 plus years of sweating, stretching and enjoying of our weekly classes (3-4 per week).
On October 7, 2009 I had total knee replacement. It was actually the 5th surgery on the same knee. Having always been active and involved in athletics of some sort since I was a child, a new challenge is something that I have always welcomed. Little did I know that I would get so hooked on something that is so hard yet so enjoyable at the same time. My rapid recovery from this type of surgery can be partially credited to the conditioning that I have received from Jenny's hot yoga series. I was walking the day after surgery and back to hot yoga class 3 weeks after surgery and driving my car too. There is no way I could have done that without having enjoyed the benefits of practicing Hot Yoga. I ain't no spring chicken any more (62 years old) but my flexibility is probably light years ahead of other seniors my age. My mind tells me I am 30 but my body says otherwise except when I am in Nirvana (yoga class). Actually I feel good all the time.
Here's a special shout to all the husbands and wives out there in Couch Potato Land. Are you looking for something that you can share with your spouse? Then Hot Yoga may be it. My wife Carol and I come to class almost always together and we enjoy the individual time in Yoga but also the togetherness we feel in sharing something that we both enjoy. Being an old jock, it was easy for me to jump into something as crazy as this but it wasn't so easy to get my wife to come to class. It took me a couple of months to coax her into doing something that was totally foreign to her but once she starting coming to class it was amazing how much she enjoyed it. Let me tell you, she is AWESOME! I stay on the other side of the room because she can kick my *&%@! in all of the 26 postures that we do.
Here's what you get out of Hot Yoga at HYJC: stress reduction, strength and muscle toning, stamina, weight loss, balance, peace and quiet for 90 minutes, a huge sense of accomplishment, fun, lots of sweating and the enjoyment of practicing with a room full of Yogis (that's yoga talk for wonderful new friends).
Thanks for providing such a wonderful ongoing experience.
If you are going to have an addiction problem, let it be Hot Yoga.
I am completely hooked and will be for the rest of my life. I can't believe how great I feel. Jenny's Hot Yoga series will change your entire outlook on life. It is the most challenging 90 minutes of your life and that is why I love it so much.
I travel for work and have been to several studios all over the country and this studio blows them all away. I am so impressed by the size of the studio, the steam room and most of all the cleanliness.
This studio has such great students who encourage and care about one another. The teachers are amazing. They are all extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and their passion for Hot Yoga is contagious. The studio owner Jenny will keep you in line and will push you to be the best you can be. Jenny, you are an inspiration and I thank you for your support and for motivating me over the years.
Jenny thank you for having such an amazing studio.
I just read through the testimonials and realize my story is not uncommon. I turn 50 next year and I want to be prepared to live the next half of my life as a healthy, active person. Now I know what it takes, Hot Yoga. What is so special about hot yoga? This practice works the entire skeletal structure, adrenals and requires supreme focus. The teachers/instructors are there to hold you to a standard, to show you what is possible and to push you to do your very best. It isn't a casual approach, it doesn't offer any easy answers. Hot yoga treats your body like a sponge that must be rung out and replenished with fresh pure water. I have never felt so good in my life than I do after class.
I feel very fortunate to have found Jenny's version of hot yoga because I didn't think I was capable of achieving my current level of fitness. In 6 months of attending class 3-4 times per week, omitting afternoon snacks because you don't want to eat 4 hours prior, and really trying my hardest to meet the high standards set for each posture, I have tangible results. I have lost 25 pounds, many inches (didn't record them) and my cholesterol is lower than it was in my twenties! It is 150. Prior to January I was pushing 300. Meds never got me below 200. I sleep better, feel stronger and walk taller. I still have a long road ahead of me. I plan to progress as much as my time and body allow.
If you are like me, on the first day you may want to run for your life to escape the pressure cooker (heat and expectations), but if you stay, time and effort will be rewarded. It all comes down to the simple axiom, anything worth doing, is worth doing well. This take no prisoners philosophy of maintaining high standards is sadly missing in many aspects of American life. I'm no athlete; I didn't think it was possible for me to reach beyond myself. I have been guilty of taking the easy way out, short cuts and moving on to the next thing promising results. I realized hot yoga had something very special to offer. Jenny, the owner, doesn't accept less than your best, and she commands your attention and respect. She deserves it and demonstrates the highest level of commitment to the program. She is the consummate coach. Once you get into the flow, you will feel privileged to participate with a group of dedicated practitioners.
You must relinquish your ego, your self expression, your expectations and you absorb all the benefits. This doesn't happen overnight. At first you may be resentful, uncomfortable or defeated. GOOD! Get past your attitude. Break down your barriers to success, give it up and make the commitment to overcome your fear of failure, your fear of not being in control. You will be transformed.
I have witnessed new students who think they are joining a comfortable spa. It is a beautiful studio. They expect service, they expect attention, they want to be coddled, they don't want to be criticized for not following the instructions. While the seasoned veterans stand at attention staring straight ahead waiting for the expected commands to carry out to the letter, the disgruntled newbies may either decide to give in, and get with the program or never to return. No hand holding here! You are paying to get exceptional coaching and you don't argue with your coach, you thank them for pushing you beyond your ability, beyond fear. You will soon earn the respect of the fabulous instructors once they see you are willing to put forth 110% of your effort and time to developing a beautiful practice. They want you to succeed and you will.
If I start talking about hot yoga, I can't stop bragging - that's what my friends say about me these days. It makes me feel so good and brought so many changes in me. Will just stick to some numbers only about those changes and stop bragging...
In 30 classes over a span of 5 wks - lost 13 lbs; lost 2.5 inches off my waist and most importantly lost more than 30 points on my cholesterol level - now below 200. And all that in just over a month. Only other thing I did during this month is running 3 miles/day 2-3 times a week and just watching what I eat. No rice and any sweet.
Thanks so much to Jenny and my brother who introduced me to Hot yoga.
I had heard of Bikram Hot Yoga for years, but never truly considered it. Progressively, through the years, my posture became worse. I was my own ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ and hated it. I tried everything from stretching exercises to work outs in the gym; no matter what I did, nothing worked. Because of my horrible posture, I always had chronic back, neck and shoulder pain. I decided, at 31 years of age, that I would have to live the rest of my life this way.
On a whim, I decided to visit the studio. The first class was good. I was able to do most of the postures to the best ability a ‘first timer’ could and the heat surprisingly did not ‘get to me.’ Deciding to go for a second time, I found that this second time around was not at all like my first time… I had to sit down for most of the class and thought to myself, sitting there, “I’m never going to be able to do this.” After the class was over I was upset. I felt discouraged, sad. I felt defeated. My friend who had come with me was on the same boat. We were a barrel of negativity, just sitting there talking about how hard the class was.
I think to this day, it was a gift from the yoga gods or God himself, when Jenny came in and started talking to us. She told us it had to be hard in order for it to work. She said that if we kept coming and prepared ourselves correctly before class by taking our electrolytes and drinking plenty of water, the classes would be completely different and eventually, get easier. She said it takes will and determination and a special personality to see it through. She said many things that evening, including that we WILL loose weight if we kept coming. “Loose weight?” I thought to myself. I’ve been trying to loose weight for years. I was the kind of person who would loose weight and gain it back in no time. So at that point, I was curious. Even though I can be a ‘negative’ person on the surface, I’m a very determined person deep on the inside. Jenny lit a fire within me. All I wanted to do was keep coming and get better. I wanted to be like those yogis in the front and second row. I started Hot Yoga on Jan 2nd. Today is March 25th. I’m a completely different person both physically and mentally. I’m no longer a hunchback; I no longer have chronic neck, shoulder and back pain. My thoughts are clear. I sleep like a baby. I’ve also lost about 32 pounds, and I’m down to a size 10 from a size 16. (I haven’t been a size 10 since middle school!) I have not gained any weight back and I'm still shedding off the pounds.
Jenny and the students have been my Godsend! Jenny for pushing me and for motivating me with her ‘tough love’. and the students for all being so wonderful, dedicated and devoted to the practice. Even though I don’t know all of them personally (yet) they have all been an inspiration.
Thank you Jenny for Hot Yoga of Johns Creek Studio, and its students for giving me the health, posture and body I always dreamed of having, yet never believing it would be possible to have.
Hot Yoga works! It’s hard at times… but it works, BECAUSE it is hard. DO Hot YOGA!!
I am a 32 year old stay-at-home mom with two kids ages 4 and 1. I started hot yoga about 7 months ago for several reasons. First, I was looking for something I could do just for me - with no kids running around, etc. I have found that carving out time just for myself is essential to my overall well-being. Second, I desperately needed to get back in shape after having my second child. I had a lot of extra weight and was experiencing low-energy, high stress and just generally not feeling great overall.
Because of my very limited amount of free time, I knew there was no way I would have time to start a cardio fitness program AND make time for relaxation/meditative techniques such as yoga, Pilates, etc. When I heard about Hot Yoga I thought I quite possibly had found something that could help me in all the areas I was looking for - all in one workout. It was just a theory, but I felt I was on to something.
Well, as I mentioned, it is 7 months later and I am in a lot of ways a different person. I have lost 30 lbs and gone from a size 12 to a size 4. Practicing this yoga spurred other changes in my life that contributed to this weight loss such as eating (much) better, higher energy levels and a higher overall sense of well-being. I am also so much more connected mentally with my body. Now I physically crave this yoga and I mentally crave the "alone" time.
I really love the location because it has a serene atmosphere and it is VERY clean. I am somewhat of a "neat freak" and I find this studio to be in excellent condition. I would certainly recommend it and hot yoga to just about anyone with the willingness to give it an honest try - it does take some dedication and determination, but I have truly enjoyed it every step of the way.
Hot Yoga is highly addictive and may be very beneficial to your health and overall well-being!
I do like everything about it:
- Jenny, the Yoga-Master, she is the boss during class
- the intensity of the work-out
- the way your body feels after it and the next day
- the sparkling clean studio
- the stretching, which I have been missing in my work-out regimen
- the no-appointment class schedule
Thank you Bryant for telling me about this!
I am a backpacker. I go up mountains and down mountains. I'm 49 years old and it takes a lot for me to go up mountains. Over the past few years, it has gotten tougher. About a month ago, I decided I needed help with my cardio-vascular that my fitness center has not given me. I knew I needed a workout that had structure and pushed me more. I could not get myself past riding a bike on "manual", for an hour - on level 4 or 5. I think a lot of people know what I mean. So... my girlfriend, an Ashtanga Yoga instructor, went to Hot Yoga while visiting and talked me into trying it.
"Welcome to the Hot Yoga Torture Chamber!"
I had second thoughts. "Can I do this?" Yes... I can do this. I did do this. I do this.
So... the testimonial:
I love it. I will have a Hot Yoga practice for the rest of my life. I have felt a change in my body and my mind. I've lost weight. I feel better. When I leave class, I am pumped. (That is an understatement). I am more than pumped. I am energized and invigorated. Thanks Jenny.
Now, my problem. For the next 3 weeks, I am traveling to locations that DO NOT have Hot Yoga. (What's up with that?) Not good at all. So the good news for me is that I found Hot Yoga, the bad news is that there are places that have not.
Before discovering Hot Yoga, I had issues with my lower back and had trouble sleeping. I was about 13 pounds over my preferred weight (the weight where most of my clothes actually fit well). I have struggled with allergies all my life from dust, pollen, mold, and mildew. For this, I was regularly taking over the counter allergy medication, Actifed, Sudafed, Triaminic, Advil Cold and Sinus and seeing an Allergist who was beginning to set his watch by my visits. The last resort that I really wanted to avoid was taking a prescribed steroid to strengthen my immune system, which he had prescribed right before my first yoga class.
My tennis game was hampered by a sore shoulder, which was diagnosed by a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine as a "shoulder impingement" - defined as "the excessive rubbing or squeezing (impingement) of the rotator cuff and shoulder blade". As well, I had tennis elbow and went through physical therapy and would take anti-inflammatory meds, heat pads and ice packs for relief after playing a match. Little did I know that I was well on my way to a torn rotator cuff!
I took my first Hot Yoga class on the day that the studio opened and haven't stopped going. In fact, I think that it has become a "positive addiction" for me. You could say that I am "addicted" to sleeping really well with no back pain. My allergies have gone away completely and on the rare occasion that I am sick, the symptoms are greatly reduced. I believe that the latter is due to a strengthened immune system and improved diet resulting from the regular practice of Hot Yoga.
My shoulder is now pain free and my tennis game has greatly improved. No Advil, heat rub or ice packs! My serve is back to where it was in my younger days with greatly improved flexibility! Thanks to Hot Yoga, staying well stretched has improved my tennis game and golf game as well as my energy level and stamina during each outing. I am convinced after talking to other students in my yoga classes that it is a great way train for other sports like running, triathlon, biking, skiing, etc. I am also amazed at the many positive changes that other students are experiencing. I hope that they will write in as well to tell their stories. A big plus in the studio is the Steam Room with purified water that opens up your pores and respiratory system and really super charges the many positive effects of each yoga session.
I believe that I have discovered the "Modern Day Fountain of Youth" except that it has been around for thousands of years and as a result, the art of Hot Yoga has been finely tuned and perfected through the centuries and now approved by our medical community as this wonderful system that allows the body to heal, strengthen and take care of itself naturally with no drugs or brainwashing. Imagine that! In fact, there are many doctors and surgeons who attend classes regularly.
I feel as though I am adding years on to my life, increasing my focus at work and enhancing the enjoyment of my leisure time because I feel great all the time. Those little aches and pains that we all learn to live with are gone. For example, I can rake the leaves without feeling like I am going to pull something. I really like the fact that I don't take any meds ... over the counter or prescription. For those considering Hot Yoga, don't let the heated room scare you away. You'll learn to like it or at best tolerate it and find it to be a safe way to stretch, exercise and stay healthy. You may even find that the hot Georgia summers are much more tolerable as a result of regular exercise in a heated room! All in all, I really feel like I have discovered something here that is genuinely good and so I feel obligated to simply pass it along. A big thanks to Jenny for giving Alpharetta this great new studio.
Here’s to your Health!
